Real Madrid won Atalanta at home 3-1 in UEFA Champions League 1/8 finals second leg on Tuesday to cruise on to the quarterfinals on aggregate 4-1.
When arriving at Madrid Atalanta knew they needed to score at least two goals in order to go on to quarterfinals. That is why when Karim Benzema scored on the 34th minute thanks to mistake made by Marco Sportiello, did not change much for Atalanta. This goal was fifth for Benzema in Champions League this season.
Although Atalanta played aggressively and showed how much they wanted to win, they did not create much chances for themselves, but for Real Madrid. On the 58th minute Ferland Mendy drew a faul in the box by Rafael Tolói anjd Sergio Ramos scored the penalty kick which was his 101st for the club. On the 83th minute Luis Muriel scores on back for the guests but only a minute later sends Marco Asensio a ball behind Sportiello and that is how the game ended.
In the other game on Tuesday night Manchester City strolled to the quarterfinals as well by beating Mönchengladbach 2-0 at home on aggregate 4-0. Last two quarterfinalists will get their tickets today when Chelsea welcomes Atletico Madrid in London and defending champion Bayern Munchen plays against Lazio at home.
The draw takes place on 19 March and first quarterfinals will be played on 6 April.
